Last week David was driving to work early in the morning in a fairly remote area when he spotted a dead kangaroo by the side of the road, sadly it was not unusual.

Two days later, same route, same destination, he glanced at the same dead kangaroo still laying on the side of the road, but this time something moved……David quickly stopped to check it out.

What he found was a young joey in the pouch, it was still alive. David called WIRES, he was now late for work, could WIRES send someone to retrieve the joey from the pouch, he would put a stick with pink tape around it and place it next to mum kangaroo.

WIRES volunteers Diane and Tanya quickly sprang into action, the distance was 60km but they were hopeful they would be able to locate the tiny joey that would most certainly be in serious trouble.

The stick with the pink tape was located, beside the stick was the dead kangaroo, and in the pouch was the little joey, so cold and clinging to life, it had been two frightening and very cold nights.

Diane and Tanya came prepared; the little joey was soon snuggled into a warm pouch.

The little Eastern Grey kangaroo joey is slowly recovering from her ordeal, she is warm, and she is fed special kangaroo formula at 4 hourly intervals. As she develops she will join other Kangaroo joeys in care and eventually she will be released back to the wild.

PLEASE stop if you hit an animal, or if you come across one dead on the road. All female marsupials have a pouch, chances are very high that a live joey is in that pouch and depending on species there may be more than one joey, they don’t stand a chance if they are not found in time. This little joey would not have lasted another night.

Thank you David for stopping, saving this precious little kangaroo.
