The Magpie Goose may be found throughout coastal northern and eastern Australia. They feed mainly on aquatic vegetation.
Magpie geese mate for life, some males mate with two females, all of which raise the young thus giving the young a better chance of survival having the extra parent. During the breeding season the male construct the nest in a secluded place. The nest may be in tree 5 m or more high on or near the wetland, or on the ground made up of trampled reeds, or a floating platform.
